Birth Photography

Whenever I tell people I’m a birth photographer the response can go two ways: ‘’Wow how amazing! I wish I had a photographer there!’’ or the other one ‘’ What?! Really?! Never in my life would I want photos of that’’. Perhaps you didn’t even know that birth photographers exist. All these points are perfectly understandable. However, It’s not just the picture of the moment when the little one is born that we are here for, it’s so much more!

You are most likely reading this because you have some sort of interest in birth photography, maybe you’re just curious or perhaps you’re considering having a photographer there for the birth of your little one. So why consider having a birth photographer there at all? Birth photography is all about telling a story, the story of the birth of your little one. The moments of anticipation beforehand, documenting the moment when you turn inwards to catch your contractions, as well as having the look in your eyes captured when you meet your baby for the first time. All the emotions, all the love, all the excitement, perfectly bundled together to look back onto forever.

Your child being born is likely one of the most life-changing events in your life. While at the same time, it’s one of the most overwhelming moments that you will ever experience. There is so much going on. Around you, but of course also with your body. Birth photography can help you rediscover a love for your body after it has experienced so much. Changing your perspective by looking at these images, can create an appreciation of what an amazing job your body has done for you. Photographs also give the ability to bring memories back, to process the experience in your own time and space.

Why should you hire a birth photographer?

Most of the time the partner gets the job to take some photos of the birth. Not an easy task when your partner is also supposed to be there to support you and to experience the moment themselves as well. While not being able to document those powerful moments you will experience together at birth.

‘’But what about my parents or my good friend who will be there?’’ Although a family member or a friend might have a good camera themselves, they are usually emotionally invested, and might perhaps not be able to continue taking photos for you when they are assisting you or when they are admiring the adorable newborn baby.

If you have a professional photographer there, you don’t have to worry about any of this. A birth photographer is there to make beautiful documentation of it all, from the start of the contractions to meeting your lovely little one. I will capture your entire story with a trained artistic eye, without interfering in this precious moment. It’s also possible to have me there for a planned cesarean birth.

There is still a lot of taboo around birth photography, while it’s such a beautiful event that should be celebrated more in my opinion. By taking photographs, we also open up the conversation more surrounding birth. Most of us know the scary stories about birth, and we tend to forget how beautiful it also can be. It’s the start of a new life after all!

Maybe I’ve taken away some doubts surrounding birth photography, but if you would just like to know more or you have questions, feel free to get in touch for more information.
