Meet Marieke — Boudoir Photographer, Glasgow

Marieke, boudoir photographer based in Glasgow, Scotland

Hello! I'm Marieke (Mar-ee-kah). Born in the Netherlands, now firmly rooted in Glasgow, and the photographer behind Marieke Captures.

I built this studio because of my own body. Not in spite of it.

At 20, I was diagnosed with anorexia. The years before that diagnosis were spent at war with the person I saw in the mirror. I know what it costs to move through the world convinced your body is the problem. I lived inside that for a long time.

Recovery gave me a lot of things. One of them was a camera. And through the lens, I started to understand something: the way we photograph people changes the way they see themselves. Most photographs I encountered either ignored bodies like mine or held them up as something to be fixed. I wanted to make something different. A space where the body in front of the lens wasn't a problem to be solved, just a person to be seen.

That is what this studio is. Six years and over 400 people later, I still believe the same thing I believed at the beginning: you do not need to earn the right to be documented. You already are worth it, exactly as you are today.

My way of Life

When I'm not behind the lens, you'll find me on the dance floor, gaming, attempting sourdough, or curled up with a book. Whenever we can, my partner Dawn and I take our dogs Nevis & Bramble out into the Scottish hills.

I'm also a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, and that shapes the kind of space I try to create. Everyone is welcome here. Full stop.

If you'd like a glimpse behind the scenes, you can find me on Instagram most days.

When you're ready to talk, I'm here.
